Talking Yourself Out of – and back into – Workouts

This morning, I wavered on whether to run outside with John or to head to the gym for an “easy” elliptical workout (and, ahem, watch Revenge). I have this habit of telling myself that I need to recover and that I shouldn’t be too tough on my body – which is true – but I also think I use that as an excuse sometimes in to talk myself out of running, especially in the cold. The thought crossed my mind as I was debating what workout to do that to keep improving with my running, I need to keep challenging myself. So, I put on my running tights and all my other cold weather gear (and, of course, my reflective vest) and headed out to hit the roads with John.

We ran part of our regular loop but ran it in the opposite direction – It seems like there are way more uphills running it that way! I felt a little bit slower than yesterday’s runs – and I could definitely feel fatigue in my glutes and hamstrings on the inclines – but I was really happy I ran outside.

Distance: 4.68 miles

Time: 34:51 minutes

Average Pace: 7:27 minute/mile

We ran our standard 5 mile loop yesterday, but left the Garmin at home, but I could tell we were faster yesterday. I’m really happy to see these times off the treadmill – I know John helps push me too! I was definitely pushing myself today – especially at the end on a long hill where I got pretty breathless – but it didn’t feel too intense. But I’ve got to spend some time strengthening my hamstrings and glutes to continue to improve. I just get so bored in the weight room lately. Maybe I’ll head back to Body Pump…it’s been a while.

It was a good thing we ran hard this morning because one of John’s coworkers gave him a pack of 2 half pound Reese’s cups. ha! Check this sucker out!

John is known for his love of Reese’s Cups and I often get to benefit. 😉 Although, I have to be honest – I don’t love them as much as I used to. Justin’s peanut butter cups are waaaayyyy better. 😉

I’m off to have some quality time with The Stick – A Toothbrush for Muscles. heh. That tagline cracks me up! But I won’t be laughing for long once it hits my IT band. 🙂 (psssst they have free shipping on The Stick right now! I’m an affiliate – full disclosure – and they said it’s just a trial so the free shipping may not continue).

Have a great night!

Do you talk yourself out of workouts? How do you talk yourself back into them?

Which is better? Reese’s Cups or Justin’s Cups? 🙂

I was just thinking about this tonight. I don’t usually talk myself out of them but I think so negatively about them that I dread them. I have learned to just get up and GO! I always tell myself stop thinking about it and just do it. You always feel better afterwards!

Justin’s are WAY better. They have a limited time only white chocolate version [for 2 months at whole foods only!] that are amazing. I don’t even really like white chocolate, but it’s crunchy + thick and so so good. The past few months are the first in awhile that I’ve not been able to work out on a steady basis and lift as much as I like to, due to a ridiculous schedule [and dog walking takes priority]. When I do get a little time here + there it’s been hard to get motivated to go to the gym, rather than just hop on our spin bike in the basement. So, I’m currently trying to talk myself back into weights…which I do love, so hopefully it won’t be hard. 😉 Rambling done…

I HATE white chocolate – but I trust your taste. 🙂 I’ll have to track them down!

      You’re such a good dog mom. 🙂

      Let’s catch up soon!

I’ve never had a Justin’s peanut butter cup, so I can’t compare — I’ve never seen them for sale here in Canada. Sad face. 🙂

Ummm I’ve been struggling with this so much lately!! AH! I was on the treadmill last week and talked myself out of running: “Oh man, I’m kind of in a bad mood. I really don’t want to do this today. Plus sometimes the treadmill makes my shins hurt. Oh no. I just thought about my shins. Maybe they’re hurting? Yeah. Probably.” And then I got off. Haha. Worst. I’m working on getting out of my winter grump phase and getting back to loving working out!

Those are EXACTLY the types of conversations I have in my head! hahah!

I really do think that getting out in the sunshine helped me get out of my grump phase. Give it a try!

That, and telling myself that I can only watch Scandal, Nashville or Revenge when I’m on the treadmill. 😉

Reese’s- but I am a European and only those are available in the US Mililtary shops so… I am a Reese’s fan. I will come back to you once I taste Justin’s 😉
As for talking myself out of workouts- nope, in my case I need to force myself to rest and I must admit it is extremely difficult. I have b-plans, backups and plenty of what-if-it-is-way-to-cold-scenarios for almost every occasion 😉

I hope you can track down the Justin’s – they’re great!

I used to be the same way about needing to force myself to rest. Now I’m the opposite! 🙂

Reese’s’ of course….but, they aren’t too great for ya. haha. I have definitely used the excuse of ” taking time to recover/rest up” as a way to just not go to the gym. It comes and goes. I am currently 30 weeks pregnant and once this kid comes…I am really looking forward to getting back into my normal routine!

And the ‘new’ excuse will be that I should keep it up for myself and my kid. 🙂

I know I need to do weights but I get soooo bored! How do you alleviate boredom?

Please send me one of those Reece’s… do you just cut slices like of pie? 🙂

And finally– the toothbrush for muscles. I have one and I love/hate it. It tickles so much!!

For weights, using the Nike Training Club app is a lifesaver for beating boredom! It’s super tough – lots of compound movements.

yep, that’s exactly how we ate the giant reese’s – cut it like pie!

      I love/hate the stick too 🙂

I didn’t realize those are gluten free – good to know! 🙂

I’m actually not sure that they’re gluten-free, but there doesn’t seem to be enough gluten in them to give me my typical reaction 🙂

I’m better at talking myself into workouts than out! But a little rest is never bad!!

since we have so many people relying on us for a good workout, hard for us to talk ourselves out of it, but not to say that has not happened before. we do have those days where we have to dig really deep to get our workouts in, but we always tell ourselves our good we will feel when it’s over 😉

I don’t! But if I ever get one from them, I’ll be sure to share! The free shipping is kind of like a discount code I guess! 🙂
