Dealing with Mental Exhaustion During Workouts

Today was basically my perfect day. I woke up and had some fresh veggie juice [beet, carrot, apple, ginger, lemon] that John made for us. Then, I headed off to Paz Studios for a power yoga + Sutras class. (John went for an 11 mile run.) When I got to the studio, I bought a new yoga mat (more on that later) and was really happy with it.

The only frustrating thing about class was that while my body felt strong (probably because I only worked out twice last week), I felt emotionally and mentally drained – and I was shocked that I could feel that in my practice. I couldn’t push as much as I normally do and it wasn’t because of sore muscles or a tired body. Kind of hard to explain but it was a good reminder to me that overall health is more than just about working out and eating well – it’s also about keeping your mind and emotions in a good place. This past week has been a doozy and I felt it on the mat this morning. But, it also helped get my mind back into a better place. 

After class, I stopped by Camino Bakery for a post-yoga pick-me-up.

I got an Americano and flourless spinach-olive-goat cheese-other deliciousness quiche to go. I came home and devoured the quiche while Maizey sat nearby and begged for food. Sorry pup.

I spent a good chunk of the afternoon cleaning out closets. As part of my 2014 mantra to simplify, I’ve been throwing out all sorts of stuff. It feels great. 

And now, I’m just relaxing on the couch after an hour long walk with John and Maizey. The weather has been so cold and windy lately that I can’t bear to spend much time outside. But today, the sun came out and it felt wonderful to get some fresh air, even if it was still a little chilly. I can handle the cold, but I can’t handle wind!

Next up, I’m planning meals for the week , grocery shopping, doing laundry and just enjoying the rest of a productive day.

    Yes, definitely! I often feel like my mind is more of a determinent to how a run goes. For example, I was sick this week, and I had 14 miles to do this morning. I basically went into the run thinking “this is going to hurt,” and what to you know? It did hurt, but the challenge wasn’t physical so much as it was mental. My legs actually felt strong; it was my mind that had psyched itself out. The self-fufilling prophecy thing? It’s real.

    I have definitely felt mental exhaustion and had it reflect in my workouts before. I think your mindset when it comes to workouts can have a large effect on how effective of a workout you have.

    Btw, that quiche looks amazing! I think I might have to make some quiche this week. 🙂

    Teri, you stole the words out of my mouth. For the first time in my life, I feel the weigh of being a “real” adult, with real responsibilities with repercussions that for the first time extend beyond myself.
    I am so aware that I am going through an important learning phase, but that doesn’t make it easier.
    All of the running and lentils in the world can only take me so far, I have to do the rest 🙂

    A couple weeks ago I dealt with complete and under mental exhaustion. I was tired, couldn’t focus, and had run myself down. It took a while but I Finally came back from it. I backed down my workouts for a week or so and helped my body recover. Hope you feel better soon 🙂

    I totally understand what you mean — mental fatigue is just as real as physical fatigue for me when it comes to workouts. Sometimes I need an extra rest day, sometimes I need to change up my routine, sometimes it’s just a bad day. All I can do is take everything one day at a time, and try not to let a bad day turn into a bad week, you know?

    Mental fatigue definitely affects my workouts – especially yoga which requires a different kind of introspection. In this moments, I just take a step back and modify my poses or run, but run slower or flatter, or still lift weights but lift lighter. Basically, I cut myself a break – because no one else is going to!

    I totally know what you mean…sometimes my head just isn’t in it. It can be frustrating, but in the end I feel like just moving is what I need and I try to figure out what was going on in my head so next time I can be completely present 🙂
