The real reason I became a Beautycounter consultant

I’ve gotten a number of emails asking about Beautycounter products, if I’m Beautycounter consultant and why I like it/why I don’t like it, etc. So I’m pulling back the curtain today and giving you the honest look into why I joined Beautycounter as a consultant. [Update: I wrote a second blog post with FAQs about being a consultant 9 months in. You can read that post here.]

I don’t mess around with skin care since I have such finicky skin. I’ve blogged multiple times throughout the years about challenges I’ve had with skin care and tried a number of product lines. I’ve had problems with severe acne (which I think was really a root cause with dry skin that I was treating as oily skin) and now I struggle with dryness and sensitive skin.

Throughout the years, when I found something that worked for me, I was always uneasy about the product safety – or lack thereof. But, since my skin was finicky, I tried to tell myself that it was okay to “settle” in that area and that I couldn’t do everything in life the healthiest way possible. And I still stand by that — I don’t buy everything organic, I don’t buy everything local or grassfed, I eat processed food (TOAST FOR LIFE), but I do my best with what’s realistic and manageable for my life. I buy local when I can; I prioritize organic for the dirty dozen, and I don’t eat crappy processed food I don’t looooove. In short, I pick my battles, do my best, and move on with my life.

So, how does this relate to Beautycounter?

I’ll answer the question…but first I’m going to tell you how I was introduced to Beautycounter in the first place. I was originally introduced to the company when I was looking for a tinted moisturizer. A good friend of mine (whom I met through blogging years ago) promised I would love Beautycounter’s Dew Skin. She was right – I love it.

I had never heard of Beautycounter beforehand, but I started getting the marketing emails from them — and I actually read those emails. (What can I say? My career is in marketing so I’m a sucker for all things marketing!) And I started to fall in love with the company. I love their mission to get safer skincare into the market. And I love that it’s founded and run by strong, passionate women trying to make a difference. And I also started to learn things about the beauty industry that I couldn’t unlearn.

The eye-opening facts that terrified me

  • The United States has introduced over 80,000 chemicals since WWII and only 10% of those chemicals have safety data.
  • There are 1,400 chemical ingredients commonly used in U.S. skincare products that are banned in the European Union.
  • I learned about the link between these chemicals and chronic health issues. Toxic chemicals can mess with your hormones, potentially causing infertility, and many of the ingredients in conventional skin and beauty products have been linked to cancer.
  • And most frighteningly I’ve learned that there is a complete lack of regulation and all the loop holes when it comes to the ingredients companies are allowed to use — and we put those ingredients on ourselves and our families each and everyday.

Beautycounter is changing that.

The leaders of Beautycounter are working in Washington and meeting with members of Senate to fight for more health protective laws so that someday we won’t have to scour an ingredient list before making a purchase — and then give up and settle for whatever is on the shelf. (I’m gonna be honest – I will NEVER slather coconut oil all over my body. I DO care about safety, but I also really care about convenience and being greasy head to toe ain’t convenient.)

Beautycounter has banned the use of more than 1,500 questionable or harmful chemicals through their “Never List”— all while making products that perform and feel as indulgent as any other luxe brand for makeup or skincare.

We’ve all heard about parabens and the industry as a whole has started to shift away from those. But that is just the beginning — there is so much more work to be done. Our collective voices are being heard, consumers are demanding safer products and we are starting to see the industry shift, albeit slowly. I truly feel like Beautycounter is helping to make the strides we are starting to see. And I want to support and be involved with a company like that. So I signed up as a consultant.

The Beautycounter products I’m wearing here are Dew Skin Shade 2, the brow pencil in Light, cream blush in Hibiscus, and Lip Sheer in Twig.

What does being consultant mean?

Beautycounter doesn’t know who I am personally and they don’t sponsor any of my content. I always disclose sponsored posts on the blog or my social channels. But, for total transparency, if you shop for Beautycounter through me, I do make a commission, just like any other affiliate links I use. And as a consultant, I get a 25% discount, which is a huge perk!

Am I planning to spam you all the time to buy products? Nope. I’ll continue to share things I love and recommend, just like I do with workout clothes, food, and fashion. But, I would really appreciate your support by using my link if you shop Beautycounter: http://www.beautycounter.com/terilynhutcheon

As a consultant, I have access to lots of product training and can answer questions you may have and make recommendations, so feel free to email me if you want some help shopping: [email protected]. If you’re interested in joining the company as a consultant, I’m happy to talk with you frankly about that too, as a blogger or non-blogger.

What if I hate it?

Well, I doubt you will, but Beautycounter does offer a 60-day return policy, no questions asked. (I recently returned some eye shadow that I didn’t like – the shade I picked didn’t work with my skin tone.) It’s nice to have the return option since shopping for make-up online can be risky!

Progress Over Perfection

I’m keeping a running list on my Beautycounter page of things that I try and love. My plan is to replace things with Beautycounter as I run out of my current brand and see if I like it. If not, I send it back. Do I think it’s realistic to use 100% safe beauty products? No, not right now. I’m still bleaching my hair. I still get my nails done, buy commercial laundry detergent and will probably never give up my beloved mascara. But, like I do with food, I pick my battles, do my best, and move on with life. And I’m really happy that now I have an option that makes it easier to pick my battles.

    1. Love Beauty Counter! As my products run out, I have been trying BC products like you. How long does the charcoal bar last? Since I keep my face wash in the shower, I am worried it will wither away.

      • I’ve only had mine for about 2 weeks. But I also keep it in the shower, and I can barely tell I’ve been using it! It still looks brand new! So, I have a feeling it will last a long time! 🙂

      • Ours has lasted much longer than a regular bar of soap. It doesn’t sit right under the spray, so I’m sure that helps, but it does sit right beneath our shampoo, conditioner, and body wash – so surely it gets wet!

    2. Love your blog and unrelated but bought the Nike Montreal sneakers you recommended and they are seriously amazing!!!!! I can’t thank you enough!! Just wish they came in black, but I do love the navy with jeans. Ok so now after reading this post, I guess I need to check out beauty counter :)).
Also have a blog request – can you talk about fueling during long runs (at what points do you eat or drink and what are your favorite products). I’m totally in awe of your 1/2 marathon PR!!!!!!!

        • I like those too and actually have them in the grey…like them for running but they are not as comfy as the Montreal (which is currently 1/2 price on Nike.com….thinking about getting the light blue ?) Keep up the great recommendations!!!!! Happy Friday!

    3. I really wanted to try the dew skin but I saw it has vitamin c in it! Vitamin C (at least in past moisturizers) makes my skin break out! Do you know it’s it’s a main ingredient?

Also: I love the look of the lip sheers! Have you tried any darker colors? I love Plum but I’m skeptical of smudging..

      Thanks!

      • Hi Shelby! For Dew Skin, the vitamin c is further down the list so it’s not going to be super big amounts. You can always try it and return it if it makes you break out!

I haven’t tried the darker colors (but that Plum looks GORGEOUS), so I asked a friend who has and she said they may smudge since they don’t get dry or matte. I personally like that because I like the feel of moist lips. And again, you could always order it and if you don’t like it, return it!

    4. Hi! How often should you use the charcoal bar? I used it every day and my cheeks dried completely out. I fixed it with the face oil though. Also…do you use the face cleanser? What are your thoughts?

      • Hi Brittany! I use it 2-4x a week, usually after a run or CrossFit when my skin is junked with sweat. (I use it with a Clarisonic Mia too, which I love! http://rstyle.me/n/cdi5ja4k3w) I think you’ll have to see how much your skin tolerates it and adjust. I definitely can’t use it everyday since I have dry skin!

I have used samples of the cleansing balm and the nourishing cream cleanser, and am planning to buy full-sizes once I run out of my current face cleansers. I LOVED the cleansing balm, but it doesn’t work well in the shower since it’s best to apply on dry skin, so that’s why I use the charcoal bar post-workout. I use a cleansing balm at night and it’s so wonderful for dry skin. But, I want the Nourishing cream cleanser to have a shower option that isn’t too drying since I can’t use the charcoal bar daily. Does that help??

    5. Love hearing your thoughts! I am right now considering becoming a consultant, and I love to hear how you are going about it! I don’t want to be an annoying sales person, but I do want to share a product I love with others! Maybe I’ll join the Beauty Counter community soon too!

      • Hi Katherine – I’ll shoot you an email!! 🙂 But in short, what I’ve found is that it doesn’t feel like sales to me because I LOVE the brand so much. And I felt the EXACT same way – I didn’t want to be an annoying sales person.

    6. This post could not have come at a better time. I’ve been wanting to try Beautycounter for a long time, but I’m just about out of my BB cream and a few other staples so this reminder is right on time! I’m also excited to learn that you can return. I’m always worried about getting the wrong tint!

    7. I have a question about their lip stuff-my lips are constantly and forever dry. What is their lipstick/lip gloss/etc like?

      • I LOVE the lip sheers!! I also have really dry lips so I feel your pain. The lip sheers are super moisturizing and I don’t feel like they dry my lips out at all. It’s not sticky and it smells nice (which is weird to note, but I like it!). The colors are beautiful too. I actually had a friend text me today about how much she loves the lip sheers and she is a lipstick junkie. 🙂

The peppermint lip balm is great too if you want something without color. And if you want more color, I actually used the cream blush on my lips today (at the suggestion of another friend) and it looked fantastic. And again, didn’t dry my lips out, even though it was matte. (I posted it on my instagram stories so you can see it there if you’re on instagram – @afoodiestaysfit)

I honestly LOVE it all. Definitely worth a shot!

Let me know if you have more questions. 🙂

    8. OMG have we talked about Trish mascara?!? I will never wear anything else! Tubes for life!!!
