Friday Favorites/ Workout Gear

Friday Favorites: New Workout Leggings & Running Crops, Laundry Detergent & Deodorant (yep, deodorant)

Today’s favorites: new workout leggings and capris, the best aluminum free deodorant (I finally made the switch from anti-perspirant!), safer laundry detergent, and a new night cream.

HAPPY FRIDAY!!!!!! This week has felt so long to me and I am so ready for the weekend, especially since it will be 70 degrees tomorrow and 76 degrees on Sunday!! Never mind that it’s currently 28 degrees. I have faith.

Let’s get into Friday Favorites!

These leggings

My mission to replace my nasty old workout gear continues. I’m very picky, which means I’ve sent back more than I’ve kept. (I do almost all my shopping online since we don’t have many great stores here and Nordstrom is just so easy for shipping/returns.) Anyway, these Zella leggings are a keeper! I had to exchange them for a smaller size because they run huge; I ended up with an XXS and my quads are definitely not XXS. They don’t have as much compression as a lot of leggings I have but I really like that. They’re soft and comfy. And really cute. Maizey approves

These running crops

I’m quickly becoming a Nike Epic Run crop devotee. This is my second pair and they are just so dang comfortable. Finding running crops that have just enough compression but still move is hard. But these are awesome.

This night cream

I recently ordered the Beautycounter Rejuvenating Night Cream to see how it compared to the Nourishing Night Cream. I’m obsessed. It’s so rich but absorbs right into my skin. It’s totally different than the Nourishing night cream, and for my dry skin that is starting to show some signs of being in my 30s (yay), more active ingredients & extra moisture is a very good thing.

This laundry detergent

Since I’ve been switching out my skincare and makeup for safer products, I’ve also taken a look at other products that made me a little uneasy. Laundry detergent was up there after my friend, Brita, pointed out that we inhale remnants of our laundry detergent and the chemical fragrances all day long. I used to make my own laundry detergent, but don’t really have the time, space or desire to do that right now. Brita recommended this detergent and I’ve loved it! It uses such a small amount too, so I think it will last forever. I also bought these wool dryer balls to use instead of dryer sheets. They help my clothes dry faster dab and since I dab them with lavender essential oil before each load, it smells amazing.

Plus, I’m a sucker for branding as a career marketer and I love the packaging. 🙂

Anti-perspirant is another thing I was uneasy about since some research indicates aluminum in anti-perspirants may be linked to breast cancer. But I tried to ignore it since I’m a heavy sweater. Or at least I thought I was. I ordered this deodorant and haven’t felt sweaty once. Plus, it smells so good! But oof, it’s expensive at $12 a pop. Do you guys have another all-natural deodorant you’d recommend that’s cheaper?

This song.

I mentioned how good the music and sermon was at my church in Sunday’s post, and they posted a video of the performance that blew everyone away that day. This gives me chills. So much talent.

Alright, I think that’s a good note (heh) to end on. Have a great day!

My hands-down (or maybe arms up?) favorite deodorant is Schmidt’s Naturals ( It works so well and I never realized how stinky conventional deodorant made me until I made the switch to Schmidt’s. I buy mine on Amazon, but I’ve also scored some at TJ Maxx before. I live in Central Texas, so my deodorant gets a workout for a good portion of the year and I can attest to how well Schmidt’s works!

Nellie’s Laundry Soda isn’t very natural at all.
It has Alcohol ETHOXYLATES (C12) which has some cancer concerns.

It is only rated a B on the environmental working group’s website.

As far as deodorant goes I use the finally pure brand because it has nothing in it of any concern.

agh crap! Is there another laundry detergent you would recommend?

        • Nancy

Yes! I can chime in here – Ecos. You can get it at Whole Foods (and it’s on Amazon, too). I’ve been trying EVERYTHING to get rid of these hives, and I too switched to natural detergent.

  • Natalie

How many drops of essential oils do you add to your dryer balls? I’ve tried to but I don’t think I can smell anything!

  • Whitney

If you find another deodorant that you like, please let us know. I have been using that kind too but don’t want to keep paying that price even though I really like it.

  • Kara

I swear by Zion Health Adama Minerals Clay Dry Deodorant. It totally holds up to my sweaty workouts. My local Whole Foods carries it for around 7 or 8 bucks.

  • Stephanie

I recommend Schmidt’s Clary Sage and Lavender deodorant. Works great and smells awesome! Would you please post your “recipe” for laundry detergent even though you no longer make it?

  • Sarah

I like Toms Naturally Dry deodorant! I generally shower at night & put it on right after and then another quick swipe in the morning. It’s not 100% sweat proof, but when I do sweat, there’s no smell! And the price is right. I’ve bought it at Target, Bed’s on Amazon, too.

  • Kaitlin

I’m another fan of Schmidt’s deodorant! I use the lavender and sage scent. The jars and sticks cost the same but I use up a stick a lot faster, so I usually opt for the jar. I also now keep one of their new sensitive skin sticks on hand in case I need to apply immediately after shaving – I don’t think it’s quite as effective as the original formula but it’s the only natural deodorant I’ve tried that doesn’t irritate my skin when it’s freshly shaved.

I’m going to look for some wool dryer balls. It would be great if my clothes dried faster because of them. Thanks for sharing!

  • Andre

I like Schmidt’s, Primal Pit Paste, and Sam’s Natural… The formulas are very similar to each other as are the results. No smell!! ??

  • Sara @ RunningWife

I love love love the song Unsteady! We actually played it for our little boy while he was in the womb for several months leading up to his birth – now my husband will turn the song on when he’s crying and sing to him and he quiets right down.

I don’t have any recommendations on the non anti-perspirant deodorant but look forward to reading the comments! I tried to cut it out when I got pregnant but was too sweaty and I just couldn’t cut it out completely.

    • Teri [a foodie stays fit]

Aw that’s so sweet about your little boy and that song!! Thanks for sharing! <3

Sounds like Schmidt is a winning deodorant based off all the comments! I'm going to order that when I run out of my Primally Pure!

  • Hannah

Another vote for Schmidts! I’ve also heard good things about primal pit paste, but haven’t tried it yet. I may have it on hand this summer when it gets really warm out. Never going back!

  • Michelle

I make my own laundry detergent! I’ve had good luck with it!

  • Lindsey

Another Schmidt’s fan! The lime + bergamot scent stays fresh all day. I actually had breast cancer last year, and deodorant is the first thing my oncologist said to change. I’ve tried several brands (Tom’s, Crystal, Every Man Jack, Green Naturals – basically everything WF sells) and Schmidt’s is the best by far for me.

    • Teri [a foodie stays fit]

Oh wow, that’s crazy your oncologist said to change that first! I hope you’re doing well now! And thanks for the Schmidt’s info – I’m definitely trying that! <3
