Since I still don’t have more wedding photos, I thought it’d be fun to share some (ahem, a LOT) of pictures from our honeymoon! I’m going to break it down into three parts so it’s not total overkill in one post. Today’s post is an overview of our stay at the Sugar Beach Resort in St. Lucia (a caribbean island) and I wrote separate posts on the food at the resort (the old Bayside Restaurant is now closed, so I can’t speak to the new one, although I’m sure its amazing), and our favorite activity, hiking the Gros Piton. I also wrote a post about what it was like working with a travel agent since that was a new experience for us, and I was SO HAPPY WE USED HEATHER. Cannot emphasize that enough!

Like I blogged about here, Heather helped us narrow down our honeymoon location to three spots. The criteria we gave her was that we wanted something that was relatively easy to get to (no 12+ hours of flying!), was relaxing but still had plenty of activities to do, and had good food that could accommodate my dietary restrictions. All inclusive wasn’t important to us, and I went into that in the honeymoon food post!

Why we chose St. Lucia a Viceroy Resort

We also looked at Riveria Maya in Mexico and Peter Island in the British Virgin Islands, but ended up choosing St. Lucia since it just looked so freaking gorgeous. And we’re so lucky that it wasn’t impacted by all the hurricanes since it’s so far south. St. Lucia’s Sugar Beach sits on an 18th-century sugar plantation, and it’s just SO beautiful.

We got married on a Friday and left for our honeymoon on Sunday morning. Our flight left Greensboro at 7:30 am, had a short layover in Atlanta, and landed in St. Lucia around 2:30! Not a bad day of travel at all. We were both exhausted on the flight since I got really sick after eating out the night before – disaster – but luckily I felt fine by the time we landed. Nothing tests a brand new marriage like being up ALL NIGHT LONG sick in the bathroom.

Heather nailed her description of the Sugar Beach Viceroy St. Lucia resort.

I really feel that you two would love the overall vibe – it’s very laid-back luxury, not pretentious, with lots of people like you two. Focus is on great service, great food and gorgeous spaces. They aren’t stuffy at all. I know we chatted about St. Lucia during our call, and it definitely fits your needs for things to do. You can feel comfortable eating the food (as far as getting some awful illness I mean, hah) and they would completely take care of your needs, Teri, with dietary restrictions – and their sushi is awesome!

Rooms at Sugar Beach Viceroy

We had our own villa at the Sugar Beach Viceroy, which was AMAZING. (Major thanks to Heather for swinging that room upgrade! We were supposed to be in one of the Sugar Mill Rooms which still would have been amazing. But the villa was incredible.) We were in a great spot within the resort since we felt really secluded and had tons of privacy. Other units were closer together and we were glad ours felt totally away from everyone.

This picture does NOT do the room justice. It was huge and STUNNING, with a four poster bed and an ocean view. If I go back, I promise to take better photos next time!

The room was air conditioned (not all Caribbean Resorts are, even high-end ones like), and it was nice to escape the heat and humidity from time to time.

Heather had arranged for drinks, tea and snacks to be in our room upon arrival, including plantain chips and gluten-free bread for me!

And the best surprise of all – she had an 8×10 picture of Maizey waiting for us!!! My heart exploded. So, so thoughtful.

The bathroom was HUGE with a giant walk-in shower, huge tub, and giant area to get ready in. There were also two big closets and a mini bar with an espresso machine. The rooms also come equipped with a dvd players (and they also have dvds to choose from, of course).

And we had our own private plunge pool and patio… Unbelievable.

Look at our view!! Heather hooked us up for sure.

I loved mornings on the patio. I’d make an espresso and read for a bit before Tommy woke up. I slept in a couple days until about 7:30, but most days I was up around 6 am since my body was used to that and because the sun rose so early. The sunrises were gorgeous and I was so, so happy and content.

Sunsets on our patio were pretty amazing too!

The Viceroy Sugar Beach resort

The resort itself was beautiful. I’ve never stayed at a resort, typically favoring AirBNBs or VRBO rentals, so I don’t have anything to compare it to, but it was larger than I expected. It never felt crowded in any area and it was easy to feel alone if you wanted to. But we also made some really great friends that we hung out with a bit during the week. (It helps that Tommy is the friendliest person on the planet.)

The people there were really lovely and from all over. Lots from New York (there’s a daily direct flight), tons of young honeymooners (like us) from all over the U.S., and we also met some wonderful people from Scotland. We actually met someone from Charlotte that Tommy had worked with but had never met in person. Such a small world!

The pool area was stunning between the two Pitons (which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site!).

And the resort was so pretty at night. Their lighting is on point – very romantic. 🙂

St. Lucia, and consequently, the resort are EXTREMELY hilly but you are shuttled everywhere. You can walk if you want to but it’s a bit spread out (depending on where your room is) and you’d really need sneakers to manage the hills. Every room has an assigned butler that you can call, day or night, with any needs and there is a phone number to call whenever you needed a ride to dinner, the beach, the tennis courts, the fitness center or the spa. We typically called about 5 minutes before we wanted to leave and either a van or a tuk-tuk picked us up! Riding around in the tuk-tuk was one of my favorite things about the resort!

Sugar Beach

The beach was breathtaking. The pictures speak for themselves. White sand, blue water, surrounded huge mountains.

We spent a few hours at the beach every day, reading and relaxing. They had drink service if you wanted it but we mostly chugged a lot of water!

Tommy slept while I photobombed him. hehe.

(My hat was a wedding gift from the owners! We had a kombucha cart at our wedding!)

The resort had paddle boards, kayaks and snorkeling gear available whenever you wanted to go out. We kayaked and snorkeled one day – it was gorgeous! Another day we played bocci ball, kicked around a soccer ball and attempted sand volleyball for about 3 minutes. 😉 We also did a four-hour hike one day. It’s worth seeing the volcanic springs!

But mostly, we soaked up much-needed downtime time on the beach.

And we hit up the spa too!

The Rainforest Spa at the Sugar Beach resort was GORGEOUS. It’s built into the rain forest and your treatment is in one of the little huts. They have couples’ rooms and individual rooms, and we got facials on Tuesday and  massages on Thursday. The facial was amazing, but to be totally honest, the massage wasn’t the best I’d ever had. But, the surroundings were definitely the best!!

Evenings and Dinner at Sugar Beach

We typically left the beach after sunset unless we had an appointment to get to, like a facial or massage.

I love late afternoons on the beach and watching the light change.

We liked having an espresso after a day at the beach and relaxing a bit on our patio before we headed to dinner around 7:30. Our butler called us each morning to ask where and when we wanted to eat that night, made reservations and had a shuttle pick us up.

Sugar Beach Restaurants

I’ll do a whole post about the food since it was soooo good. But, in short, we had three options. This was The Great Room, which was the dressiest option. I also recommend the Cane Bar for a pre-dinner drink!

The more casual restaurant at Sugar Beach is Bayside. We ate there for lunches and dinners a few days, and it was beach casual (cover-up and shirts required). At night, it was a little dressier, aka “resort casual”. I wore a dress most nights.

We also went off the resort one day to a neighboring resort restaurant, Dasheen, which had incredible views. But we both agreed the food was better at Sugar Beach!

Breakfast really deserves a post all its own. It was our favorite meal of the day! The food and views were amazing!

Our trip was truly perfect. We had an amazing time and kept saying all week how blessed we felt to be there! We definitely want to go back and there are SO many day trips we would do if (WHEN) we go back.

Hey Tommy, are you busy next week? Let’s go. 😉 <3

    1. We honeymooned in Jamaica, which was ok. Not nearly as good as our trip to St. Lucia – we would love to go back! I’ve done a fair amount of international travel, so at the moment my dream vacation would be RVing around the US.

    2. Looks amazing!! So many cute swimsuits and I love your dress in the pic from the Great Room, can you link to that as well or post the brand?

    3. We stayed at Ladera in St Lucia (just 1.5 years ago) and looooved it so much. Ladera shuttled us down to Sugar Beach and I’m loving the recaps to relive that trip! It was a splurge but we would love to go back, probably for an anniversary.

    4. Okay. I MUST know where you got that adorable strapless drsss you wore to dinner in the great room.

    5. We just got back from our honeymoon in Sweden and Norway. St. Lucia looks gorgeous! I’ll have to check out The Viceroy, your trip sounds so nice and relaxing.

    6. Hi ! Did you rent a car while there? We are staying at Sugar Beach as well and are wondering if a car is necessary or if you plant to do any excursions will they shuttle you?

      • We did not! The roads are kind of wild and were too nervous to drive on them haha. The one time we left the resort, they arranged a driver.
