Friday Favorites

Happy Friday! I got out of bed this morning thinking I would head out for a run, but instead I’ve been having a leisurely morning, drinking water lemon water, online shopping at Nordstrom (I desperately need black flats –  I think I’m getting these Ivanka Trump Chic Flats), and will probably take Maizey for a walk in a bit. There is something I LOVE about being up early and not working out. It’s so peaceful. I may do a short, easy run just to get the blood moving but my intended 5 miler just isn’t happening.

Canned Coconut Milk

I bought canned coconut milk to try in my coffee for the first time and I’m not sure I can go back to any of the non-dairy milks and creamers in the refrigerated section. It’s so creamy and blends in perfectly. I bought the full-fat kind because I’m making crepes for Sunday brunch (shhh don’t tell Tommy, it’s a surprise) and want to make coconut whipped cream to top them. For coconut whipped cream, you need full-fat coconut milk. Stick the can in the fridge, scoop the thick cream off the the top and set aside for your whipped cream (complete directions in that link above). Then you can stir what’s left in the can for a lighter milk option for your coffee. I also put a little of the thick cream in my coffee. And on a spoon and in my mouth. Because it is so dang good.

Practical Paleo

If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve noticed I’ve been complaining about some gut issues lately. I’ve been having INSANE bloating and just feeling swollen all over – arms, legs, face. I’ve also been having insane weight swings – talking 6-8 pounds in a DAY, so I know there have been some retention issues. After listening to The Nourished Podcast (which I blogged about last week) about digestion, I thought I’d try their advice to eat paleo, drink water lemon water in the AM, add in probioitics and L-glutamine, take apple cider vinegar with meals, and take magnesium at night. I’ve noticed a world of difference. Of course, I haven’t been strictly paleo, but I’m following it as best I can. IMG_5730

On that note, a friend let me borrow her Practical Paleo cookbook that I’ve been eyeing for a long time even before all this started. (Thanks Alise!) I love it so far! The recipes are simple and tasty, but I’m especially loving the intro and explaining all the science behind gut health. Super fascinating. I could read about gut health impacting overall health for days. Aaaand I have.practical paleo

This buchi is delicious. That’s all. And it’s local to NC, which I love. Okay, now that’s all.

Tohu Sauvignon Blanc

I had this wine at book club in Charlotte before I moved and then my lovely friend brought a bottle over on my last night in Charlotte. It is SO good and she promised the price point was great. I haven’t tracked down another bottle yet, but I need to ASAP.SAMSUNG CSC

I’m off to walk Maizey. She’s getting a bit feisty. Have a great day!!

Every time I buy canned coconut milk to use in a recipe (I buy the light from Trader Joe’s– it’s still very creamy!) I save the leftover in a small mason jar and use it in my coffee or overnight oats until its gone. It’s soooo good. It gives you just the littlest boost of sweetness!

I agree that TJ’s light coconut milk is awesome! To make whipped cream, you have to buy the full-fat kind but it’s nice that I can save the extra in a mason jar for coffee. Love the idea to use it in overnight oats!

I would love to be one of those people that drinks lemon water every morning. I will have to try it next week.

I love those black flats! Funny you mentioned them because I’ve also been in desperate need of some black ones. My last ones fell apart, so I finally ordered some last weekend. I got the Jessica Simpson Marieta flats, but I think I may have to exchange them for a half size bigger. Glad your stomach issues are starting to improve. I had a similar thing going on for the better part of this year and finally went to the doctor and found out I had a serious bacterial infection. So glad to be back to normal again. Enjoy your weekend!

I may have to check out those JS flats! I was going to buy those Ivanka Trump ones because Kendi Everyday blogged about how comfy they are!

yikes! Maybe I need to go to the doctor. I keep procrastinating. haha

If you like the book Practical Paleo, do you listen to Diane’s podcast, Balanced Bites? It is GREAT, they have tons of episodes, and I bet you could search for ones where they address your specific issues/questions. Highly recommend!

Glad you’re starting to feel better! A personalized paleo approach has helped in our house too.

You may have posted about this before but I had to ask. Looking for a leave in conditioning spray as it weighs my hair down less than actually conditioning in the shower (plus it’s easier and I’m all about being lazy when I can). I tried acure organics, which I like what it does but don’t love the smell. Any recommendations?

I am also trying the paleo diet for similar reasons! I actually started acupuncture a few weeks ago and the clinic recommended I stick to paleo and avoid cold/uncooked foods to heal. Giving up salads and iced coffee in August is the saddest thing! 🙂

I love this! I’m so happy you’re feeling better from some of our tips on the podcast. That’s such great news! Thank you for listening! ??????

Thank you for putting out such great content! You and Meg are the best!!

I can’t believe how all grains are impacting me. I’ve been eating primarily gluten-free for years, but I seem to not be able to tolerate any grains these days! I think a stressful year and multiple attemts of trying to eat “normal” (i.e. gluten + dairy) wrecked my gut so now I have to get it back in tip top shape. And that means NO grains. Oh well, it’s worth it. I feel a million times better without them.

I love the canned coconut whip! I really hope you get your digestive issues figured out… no fun at all. With the lack of sleep lately mine are a little off too… ACV, Lemon Water & Kombucha seem to help the most so hopefully it does for you too! Your blog is def. one of my favs!

Yay for Practical Paleo! It was my first Paleo cookbook and really just makes things so simple. I have her 21 Day Sugar Detox Cookbook and I like that too.
