The Weekender

Happy Friday! It was snowing again this morning and my work opened on a delayed schedule – again! I love the South. However, my friend that flew in from Utah last night for an interview/schmoozing open-house at Wake Forest’s law school found out that they cancelled the whole thing. Um, what?? I hope they offer to fly him out again – on their dime, this time. Honestly, the roads aren’t bad – the rain washed away all the snow. I hope we gave him a good enough time last that he’ll want to come to school here anyway.

My alarm went off at 5 AM and I stumbled around getting my stuff to teach spin at 5:30 AM. It was snowing so I checked the website and checked the gym recording to make sure they were open – I couldn’t find anything to the contrary so I drove over there…to find locked doors. So, I drove back home and decided to make it a productive morning instead of going back to bed by catching up on emails, blogs (most important, obviously), updating my budget, and making a new spin playlist.

Here’s the spin playlist I was going to use this morning. They missed out.

  1. Viva La Vida (Coldplay) – warm up with short pickups to get heartrate up
  2. All She Wants To Do Is Dance (Don Henley) – still warming up, sit for 30, stand for 30 gradually increasing resistance
  3. Beautiful Mash-up (Sean Kingston-DJ Earworm) – climb with jumps
  4. White Shadows (Coldplay) – sprints at level 8 resistance: 15 sec. sprint/15 sec. break, 30/30, 60/30, 60/30, 30/15, 15/15
  5. Since U Been Gone (Kelly Clarkson) – standing climb and run it out on chorus
  6. Down (Jay Sean) – standing climb and jumps on the chorus
  7. You Rock My World (Michael Jackson) – gradually increasing climb. I turn this into a little competition: I have everyone start seated and add on at least a quarter of a turn every 15 seconds; they keep adding until they have to go to a standing climb; if they want to be the first to stand, they can add more. There’s always one who wants to be the last one seated and demonstrate their toughness.
  8. Check Yes Juliet (We the Kings) – standing run; sit and sprint on chorus
  9. Dangerous (Kardinal Offishall) – seated steady pace (start at 80% effort) with gradual increases
  10. 4 Minutes (Madonna/Justin Timberlake) – standing climb, sprint on chorus (alternate between seated and standing sprints)
  11. Lovestoned / I Think She Knows (Justin Timberlake) – LONG gradual climb – fairly quick pace until about 5 minutes in…then it gets REALLY steep and slows way down
  12. Somebody Told Me (The Killers) – 30 second sprint, 30 second rest; 60 second sprint, 30 second rest; 60 second sprint
  13. Soul Meets Body (Death Cab For Cutie) – cooldown
  14. Constellations (Jack Johnson) – stretch

I started the day with a green smoothie with spinach, water, ground flax, blueberries and strawberries. I put it in a bowl a la Mama Pea and topped it with homemade granola (recipe soon, I promise!). The highlight of lunch was definitely the toppings I put on an organic apple.

You take brie, hack at the brie wedge wheel and stick it on some thin apple slices.

Then you stick it all in the microwave for 15-20 seconds.

Did you know that you can buy this giant thing of brie at Costco for about $5? You didn’t? Oh. I’m sorry. Forget I told you.

Remember how I said I spent $20 on peanut butter at Trader’s Joe’s? I lied. Three dollars of that 20 went to sunflower seed butter. I didn’t like this at first because it tasted exactly like  – duh – sunflower seeds. But the more I eat it, the more I like it. And today I discovered it’s especially good on apples.

    Man, I sure am loving this blog of yours! One request though…can you please come teach spin in Utah?? I want to go SO bad. Spin is my absolute favorite!

      You are so sweet! Thanks for your nice words.

      What gym do you go to? If you can, you should try out Lifetime Fitness on a guest pass just to try their spin classes (or any of their classes for that matter); they are awesome!

    Don’t bring up Lifetime…its a sore subject and I just might cry.
    I used to go to Lifetime and LOVED their spin classes. However, I put my membership on hold since the babe came because the only time I’m not comfortable taking my little guy to the germ infested daycare while he’s still so little and it’s winter. I’m planning to start up again come summer…until then, I’ll have to keep trudging along at other places.

      Oops, I’m sorry. I know how you feel. I wanted to cry when I moved away. If it makes you feel any better, I’ve heard their day care is one of the best in terms of cleanliness and staff training.
