How I’ve Simplified This Week

Thanks for all your comments and feedback on my theme for 2014! I love hearing ways that you are simplifying and slowing down to enjoy life more. And thanks to you who left book recommendations!!ย

Here are some ways I’ve implemented my theme “simplify” this week:

  • I’ve focused on making my phone NOT be the first and last thing I look at in the day.ย
  • I went through my scary closet and separated out items for Goodwill, items for eBay and items to consign. I vow to drop off the Goodwill and consignment items this week!
  • At my hair appointment today, I asked him to take my hair a couple shades darker in an attempt to eventually get to my natural hair color. (less coloring, less money, more meโ€ฆfor now, at least! ๐Ÿ™‚ )
  • I’ve started listening to audiobooks again while I’m driving. It’s so much more relaxing than listening to the radio, and this is a form of multitasking I’m ok with! Right now, I’m listening to The Gifts of Imperfection.ย
  • I’m reading in my downtime instead of scanning social media. I just started The Tiger’s Wife yesterday and am loving it! I’m already 24% of the way in, per my Kindle. ๐Ÿ™‚ I also have a hard copy of this book that my brother gave me a few years ago that I keep meaning to use. There’s just something wonderful about a real book.ย
  • I’ve gone to yoga 3 days in a row. This has been a nice reset to get back into my “yoga head.” I’ve been struggling with the yoga mindset lately and between these visits and all the times I went in Utah, I’ve finally feeling back in the yoga groove.ย
  • I’ve cut out coffee and wine for a few days. I definitely overindulged over the holidays and cutting out these two things helps even out my energy (eventually – it’s hard at first going without coffee!).

Today has been pretty relaxing. I slept in until 7:30, went to yoga at 10, got my hair done at 2:30 and then hugged my space heater while people worked on my heat that has gone out AGAIN. If you follow me on Instagram (@afoodiestaysfit), you can see how well I’m coping in the cold. ๐Ÿ˜‰ย

Alright, off to make dinner. Have a lovely night!ย

If you’ve made any resolutions, goals, mantras, themes, etc. for 2014, I’d love to hear how you’re doing or what you’re working on in the first four days! ๐Ÿ™‚

I have done pretty good so far with my goals for 2014. I’ve stuck to cross training along with running, done 1 day of weight training (also a goal), and really focused on my roll as a wife the past 4 days. These are all of my goals for 2014 along with some others but they will come with time ๐Ÿ™‚

I know the feeling of no heat! We had no power in Toronto for 5 days – brutal. And then our furnace broke yesterday! Fortunately it was fixed within several hours.

Loved reading about how you’ve simplified your life so far!

I just started meditating (well I actually started a few days before the New Year), but I am really starting to like it. Every morning after my core workout and before I go down to make breakfast, I shut off all noise and lights, sit with my back against the wall, close my eyes, and just focus on breathing. It is lovely and I have only been doing 5 minutes so far, but it is something I definitely want to keep working at!
P.S. Yay for yoga! I have been practicing obsessively and loving it. That is my biggest goal/hope for 2014, to get my 200 hour teacher certification!

I am so impressed! I’ve never been able to get into meditating. Good for you! It sounds lovely what you’re doing; I may give it a try! (And um, also super impressed you do a core workout every morning!)

Good luck on your yoga cert! That’d be awesome!

I wanted to do the Buffalo Half but I’m unable to because of a wedding so I’m planning on doing the Grand Island Half – which could be good bc it is very small. May 3!

I am with you on the hair – before thanksgiving I went from bleach blonde back to my natural which is brown. It was SO freeing!!! No more dealing with roots all.the.time. Or brassy hair etc. I love it! I going to get it touched up soon (it faded which was to be expected considering how bleached my hair was). I love how much stress and work this simple change removed from my daily life. Enjoy ๐Ÿ™‚

What a positive post. I think I will follow your idea of not making the phone the first and last thing I see. I am working on stopping using electronics in the bedroom, and I think this is an important part of that. Congratulations on making such a good start with your simplification! I wrote this post a few months ago about real books and kindles, and I still think real books win!

I got Gone Girl and The Fault in Our Stars for Christmas gifts, although I have an exam to get through first, so I only have textbooks to hand for now!

So awesome! I’ve gone through a daunting stack of magazines & try to keep myself doing one thing at a time, like not being on my phone during Scandal, or focusing on one task instead of two!

I have been loving these simplifying posts! My goal for this year is to slow down, which also includes simplifying. I am trying to reduce my time spent infront of a screen, be present, and minimize the “stuff” in our home as we are moving into our house soon (which is why i have disappeared for the last month!). Keep these posts coming!

I’ve decided that I’m going to work on my energy levels in January. I’m currently unemployed, and while having time off is great, it is also easy to fall into a lazy schedule. I’ve been trying to start exercising regularly again and get into a routine. Yesterday, I went on my first run in over a month, and today, I woke-up to work on blog/ job application stuff. So far, it feels like a good productive start to January, but I think I would also really benefit from some yoga.
