What to wear with a mustard skirt in the fall when summer just won’t go away + how I try to be intentional about my style and pull a look together even when I’m a bit uneasy with it!
Summer has decided to make a reappearance in Winston-Salem, and it’s been in the 80s this week. I keep forgetting that it’s warmed up, and took my coffee outside with me this morning to walk Maizey and was sweating almost instantly. I’m really hoping it cools down a bit by tomorrow morning for my run (today was a much needed day off running).
But on the bright side, my little sweating outing with Maizey reminded me to dress as if it is summer. I never quite know what time of year to wear this mustard colored pencil skirt since it doesn’t feel like a spring or summer color, and I don’t like wearing it with tights in the winter. So I’ve decided it’s perfect for fall, especially as the weather is transitioning.
My skirt and top are both a couple years old, but I love the look of this wool skirt for a dressier look and this fitted skirt (only $32!) if you want a more casual look. I think they’d look great with this rich plum shirt (sooooo pretty) or this polka dot shirt.

I’ve usually worn this skirt with a cream or white shirt, but was craving something more fall-ish (yes, that’s a word 😉 ) with deeper hues, and a sheer plaid top in my closet caught my eye. I threw on these leopard heels, which are insanely comfortable, which means I wear them all my time (my coworkers tease me for how much I wear them – I don’t even care). If you don’t want or need leopard heels, buy a pair in another color – they come in a ton of shades and materials, and they’re a perfect, comfortable height for work (or if you just don’t like high heels. I’m 5’1″…I love heels.).
Whenever I get a little uneasy about mixing patterns (leopard + plaid, in this case), I put on a bold lipstick and accessorize and own it. Those final touches just pull a look together and make it look intentional vs. accidental.

My bag for work is a reversible tote that my previous manager gave me for Christmas a couple years ago. I debated whether to go with the burgundy side or the cognac side today, but I decided burgundy may help beckon back. It’s working, right? Nordstrom still sells the reversible tote, but there are different color combos available this year; the gray one and the olive one are both so pretty! (Madewell still offers their burgundy tote though! I’ve seen it in person and it’s oh so pretty and soft.)
I went to yoga tonight and now I’m curling up on the couch with a cup of chamomille tea and Maizey to watch the presidential debate and hopefully get in bed early. I’ve got a tempo run in the morning! Wish me luck!
Hope you’re having a great week!
