My Makeup Routine

I’ve always been someone who likes to test and try lots of different makeup. I’m more committed to my skincare routine (although I do like to try new products from TRUSTED recommendations), but my makeup routine changes whenever I get a new product I love. (Or, whenever something I love gets discontinued, which has happened a lot in the last year!)

I’ve used Beautycounter makeup for years and liked most things (except the mascara), but recently I’ve been trying the Swan Beauty Box which is like Trunk Club but for skincare and makeup. You fill out a detailed questionnaire, and you receive 5 new products to try. They come in sample sizes + full sizes, so you can test all the samples, keep what you love, and send back what you don’t. So fun! (Full review coming soon.)

In my recent boxes, I’ve discovered some brands that I’d never tried and became hooked on some fun items. I wanted a dedicated place to update my makeup routine whenever something changes, so that’s what this post will be. I’ll make sure to keep it as updated as possible since I do change things up pretty frequently. I love playing with makeup! I’m also picky about makeup since I still want to feel like myself and nothing too heavy or cakey. (There’s a reason I did my own wedding makeup!!)

So, here’s my current makeup routine. See how I apply everything in this post and a super quick Instagram reel with a few other products here.

My Makeup Routine

1. Primer

After I use SPF to finish my skincare routine, I use the Beautycounter Glow First Priming Serum or this Jouer Anti-Aging Moisture Primer. I’ve never liked primers until I found these two. Most primers feel like glue on my face and like my skin can’t breathe. But both of these contain skincare ingredients to improve skin overtime, while also making your makeup last longer and look SO smooth and glowy. I always let my primer dry completely before starting my foundation. I think the Beautycounter priming serum makes my skin look GREAT right after applying it, while the Jouer Primer helps my makeup last better. So, which one you get depends on your skin/makeup goals.

2. Concealer

I’m using the Tarte Shape Tape concealer right now and I like it. I MUCH prefer the Beautycounter concealer but it’s not available right now while they work out a few kinks to the applicator wand. The Tarte concealer works just fine but doesn’t seem to cover as well or look as natural. If I run out of Tarte before the Beautycounter one is back, I’m planning to try the Ilia Concealer with Vitamin C.

3. Foundation

Next, I use the Beautycounter Skin Twin Foundation. I love how smooth and natural it looks, while still providing even coverage. I also LOVE the Chantecaille Future Skin Gel Foundation. While not cheap, it works better in the winter when my skin gets INCREDIBLY dry. It is much more hydrating than Skin Twin. But I like that Skin Twin has a little more coverage so I’ll probably switch back to that as it warms up.

4. Eyeshadow

I love this Mermaid eye shadow in copper lately. I just put it on my lids and then use my finger to lightly blend it into my brow bone. Sometimes I’ll finish with this Chantecaille Brow Lift Elcat to brighten up my arches and inner eye.

5. Eyeliner

I like to do a small amount of eyeliner everyday just on the other half of my upper and lower lash line (as close to the water line as possible and sometimes right on it). I feel like it opens my eyes up and makes me look more put-together. Right now I’m loving the Farmasi Liquid Eyeliner and the Chantecaille pencil liner in Amethyst (it pairs BEAUTIFULLY with the copper eye shadow with my green/hazel eyes).

6. Eyelash Primer

I’ve been using the Tarte Opening Act Lash Primer for a few years and I am OBSESSED with it. I’m hot and cold with mascaras because I’m always looking for the best one, but I’m super loyal to this. I coat my lashes in this and then add mascara about 1-2 minutes later after the primer sets just a bit but doesn’t completely dry. This helps prevent clumps with mascara and helps thicken and lengthen. As soon as I started using an eyelash primer I was SHOCKED by how much longer and fuller my lashes looked. It’s a game-changer if you aren’t using it yet.

7. Mascara

I’m currently loving the Thrive Cosmetics Mascara. It’s water-soluble, which means it doesn’t smear during the day as your eyes become oily. I always struggled with smudging, and I recently realized it’s because I have oily eyelids, which makes regular mascara bleed. (Odd since the rest of my skin is so dry!) This stuff is LEGIT and comes off super fast in the shower or when I wash my face with water. It makes my lashes look super long, but It’s not as full as I’d like ideally. The lash primer helps!

8. Brow Gel and Pencil

I always say that my desert island makeup pick would be brow gel. I fill my brows in no matter what, even if I’m not doing a full face of makeup. And I even filled them in for the Boston Marathon! That’s how much I love this stuff. I use the Beautycounter Brow Gel, and when I want even more impact, I use this brow pencil to fill in any sparse spots. I also like to use this Chantecaille Brow Lift Elcat right under my eyebrows for highlight and lift.

9. Blush

Nothing I’ve tried compares to the Beautycounter Cheeky Cream Blush they launched this past fall. It lasts FOREVER, and you can also use it on your lips and eyelids. It lasts all day (I do reapply if I’m going out for dinner though) and looks super natural. They have lots of shades, but like lychee, rosebud, paloma and chai the best, and I rotate among depending on my outfit. I love love love love this blush. I’m not sure I’ll ever go back to a powder.

10. Bronzer

I don’t use bronzer everyday, but I always feel better when I do, particularly around my hairline and under my cheek bones. I’m still using a very old Beautycounter matte bronzer (which has since been discontinued) but it’s almost out. Once I need to buy more, I think I’ll try this Gucci bronzer since it has amazing reviews.

I use highlighter very occasionally since I haven’t found one I love! (Tell me if you have one you like! To be fair, I haven’t tried the Beautycounter cream highlighters, only the powders which, again… got discontinued)

11. Pressed Powder

I use this Chantecaille Blur Powder to finish off my makeup look. Most powders are FAR too drying on my aging skin and are uncomfortable on my skin, but this one somehow makes my skin feel more hydrated and sets my makeup.

12. Lips

I LOVE lipstick and lipgloss. I have tons of different colors and brands, but my current favorites are the Beautycounter Sheer Genius lipstick in Lily, Tarte maracuja juicy lip balm, Essential Lip Enhancer Shine Balm by Jouer Cosmetics, and Buxom Serial Kisser Plumping Lip Stain. (When I’m on a lipstick kick, the Beautycounter ones are my favorite.)

Makeup Brushes

I try to clean my brushes once or twice a month, but if we’re honest it doesn’t happen that often. Each brush is linked here!

Your skin is beautiful! I love the Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter as a highlighter. It’s kinda pricey, but when using as a highlighter a little goes a very long way.
