Oh My Goodness Soup

I’m so punny. Wanna know why? I made the Goodness Soup [pg. 208] out of Clean Food tonight. You’re laughing at my title now, right? OK, not funny and a total obvious pun, but I give ya what I can. πŸ˜‰

DSC_0867 People, this was delicious. I love soup and I especially love this soup. I’ve never had barley before and it added the perfect bite to the soup. The recipe says to simmer the soup for at least 3 hours, but since I started it after work, it simmered for only 1.5 hours before I dished it up. [I swear I follow recipes sometimes.] It’s still on the stove, cooking on low and it keeps getting thicker and thicker. I’m so excited to eat this again tomorrow, along with a side of pie, perhaps.

Now, to explain the dessert fail which led to my lactose lapse: I’d seen on a few blogs lately the now-trendy black bean brownie. So, I thought I’d attempt it and serve it to the unsuspecting males at our weekly LOST/treat night party. I used a recipe that had good reviews and was recommended by bloggy friends. But the batter was bleeeh, even with the extra sugar added. I baked it for 30 minutes. Plus 5 more. Plus 5 more. Plus 5 more. You get the idea. It would not set up. Finally, I pulled the pan out of the oven, the guys discovered what was so secret about these magic brownies, and swore to take treat night into their own hands from now on.

And then we tasted them, ya know, just to see. Seriously nasty. Like barely palatable. So, to salvage treat night we headed off to get shakes. πŸ™‚ I let the cookies cool overnight, hoping they’d set up and taste a little better. They were slightly better today, but still too sticky and just a gross flavor.

DSC_0865-4 The missing portion is a result of multiple attempts to eat it, which just resulted in contorted facial expressions and a subsequent spit. I took this picture and then proceeded to toss it all out.

Ashley gave me another recipe to try that she swears will be better, but I can’t even think about black bean brownies at this point. Or even normal brownies. I’m scarred. And scared.

What on earth did I do wrong that so many people loved the recipe I used and my chocolate loving self couldn’t even swallow the results??

Well, I’m off to watch the Olympics. One of my childhood friends is in the finals for freestyle aerials. So crazy and so cool!

Oh, and Maizey says hi. πŸ™‚

I’m glad you ate a whole shake. I feel better about your world now. And mine. I’ve had black bean brownies before – – one of my friends tried to sneak them in as a treat for our girls night. Hers definitely set up and weren’t repulsive – – – but they were still bad news. Not on my list of things I ever want to eat again!!

I think it’s just the recipe I used. Deveree left a comment below with an alternate method that sounds like it might be better!

I’m so far behind on my Google Reader so I hadn’t seen it yet…but thank you!!!! You are so sweet! I’ll blog about it tonight. πŸ™‚

I’m so sad you had a bad black bean brownie experience! They are so easy and SO good. All I do to make mine is:

-One can pureed black beans (drained and rinsed very well, and then pureed in the blender with water- just fill the can up with water with the beans in it)
    -One box brownie mix

Mix those two together and then follow the baking directions on the box and VOILA! The yummiest BBB’s ever πŸ™‚ You can add chopped nuts if you want too. Also, I like to put a chocolate frosting on mine to amp up the chocolate-y goodness.

Bummer about the brownies, I have been curious to try a beanie brownie…OK, my husband and I were just talking about brownies tonight…we just LOVE boxed peanut butter brownies but they are so full of crap! We’ve yet to find a recipe we love as much as our box mix. We don’t make the box stuff often (I think it’s been, like, a year or more since the last batch?) but I confess they are GOOOOOD!

I really want to try recipes from Clean Food!

    Have a great night!
